The BrisKA Onam Celebration has been a cherished and vibrant tradition for the past 16 years, uniting the Malayali community of Bristol in honouring Kerala’s beloved harvest festival, Onam. Each year, the event beautifully showcases Kerala’s rich culture through traditional food, music, floral art, competitions, and heartfelt community bonding. This year’s celebrations welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of 800 to 900 attendees, creating yet another memorable chapter in BrisKA’s cultural journey.
Guests were warmly received in true Kerala style by a graceful Malayali manka, who greeted everyone with chandanakkuri applied on the forehead—an age-old gesture symbolising purity, blessing, and respect. Many attendees arrived in elegant Kerala Onam attire, filling the hall with vibrant colours and tradition. For a moment, the venue truly felt like a miniature ‘Amini Kerala’, reflecting the spirit and nostalgia of Onam celebrations back home.
Athapookkalam – A Floral Masterpiece
BrisKA takes immense pride in presenting one of the finest Athapookkalams every year, which adds charm, colour, and cultural depth to the celebration. The floral carpet is created by 15 to 20 dedicated members. Work begins at 8:00 am and takes around three hours to complete the intricate design.
The final pattern echoes the traditional Athapookkalam, made from Atham to Thiruonam in the month of Chingam, honouring the timeless saying:“Atham Pathinu Ponnonam.”

The Grand Onam Sadhya
The celebration commenced with the much-awaited Onam Sadhya, featuring 22 authentic dishes served on banana leaves—offering guests a true taste of Kerala’s culinary heritage.
For many years, the Sadhya was the result of a collective overnight effort by local associations and their representatives. Volunteers gathered the night before, began cooking at dawn, and ensured a perfect feast was ready, regardless of the number of guests. Their dedication embodied the unity and spirit of Onam, and BrisKA fondly honours those esteemed members whose contributions made the event possible for all Malayalis in Bristol.
In recent years, skilled local caterers from across Bristol have taken up the responsibility of preparing Sadhya for nearly a thousand guests, allowing members to focus more on the celebration while preserving the warmth and authenticity of the tradition.

Live Orchestra and Entertainment
A highlight of the event was the live orchestra, presented by talented singers from Bristol. Their melodious Malayalam songs created a festive and nostalgic ambiance, making the dining experience more vibrant and memorable. The orchestra continues to be one of the most appreciated and anticipated parts of BrisKA Onam.

Competitions and Cultural Activities
Tug of War
Held before the Sadhya, the Tug of War competition brought excitement and energetic participation. Teams showcased enthusiasm and team spirit. Winners received a cash award during the closing ceremony.
Playing Cards & Chess Tournaments
To ensure engagement across all age groups, playing cards and chess tournaments were also organised. These activities encouraged camaraderie, friendly competition, and joyful participation.

Grand Stage Performances and Maveli Procession
After the Onam Sadhya, the grand stage performances commenced with the traditional Maveli procession, accompanied by the rhythmic and powerful Chendamelam. The procession included the ceremonial entry of Maveli, along with esteemed committee members, the BrisKA President, and the Chief Guest, setting a festive and royal atmosphere.
The Opening Ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp, symbolising the triumph of knowledge and light over darkness—a practice integral to every Keralite celebration.

Cultural performances followed, showcasing the talents of each local association:
Once the association performances concluded, BrisKA Youth mesmerised the audience with high-energy performances that continued for nearly five hours, keeping everyone fully engaged and enthralled. The night concluded with a lively DJ session, allowing all members to dance to their favourite tunes and celebrate Onam with joy and unity.
All these moments were captured, highlighting the incredible talent, skill, and growth of BrisKA over the years—a true reflection of the strength and spirit of the BrisKA family.
Community Participation & Volunteer Spirit
The success of BrisKA Onam is built on the strong volunteerism and unity of the community. Whether in preparing the floral carpet, managing the venue, guiding guests, or supporting cultural activities, volunteers play a crucial role. Their dedication reflects the spirit of Onam—togetherness, joy, and harmony.

BrisKA Ponnonam – A Union of Local Associations
BrisKA Ponnonam stands as a shining example of unity among all affiliated local associations. Together, they have upheld the tradition of celebrating Onam in grand style for Bristol’s Malayali community over the years. The BrisKA Executive Committee, representing each local association, takes immense pride and joy in organising this consistently successful event, regardless of external challenges.
We, the BrisKA Executive Committee, extend our sincere gratitude to every member for their support, enthusiasm, and contributions. It is this unity that makes BrisKA Ponnonam feel like home—just like one big koottu kudumbam, reflecting the warmth and togetherness of true Keralite culture.
This year’s BrisKA Onam was yet another resounding success, filled with cultural richness and heartfelt community spirit. From the vibrant Athapookkalam and the authentic Sadhya to the energetic competitions, mesmerizing stage performances, and lively DJ session, every element contributed to an unforgettable celebration.
BrisKA continues to uphold the values of Onam—unity, gratitude, joy, and togetherness—bringing the essence of Kerala to the heart of Bristol, year after year.
